I've finished Scythian light horse unit.
Because I wanted to add some flavour to this unit please notice half naked horseman. On his left shoulder I painted tattoos.
Scythians like other nomadic peoples valued tattoos. There are no written sources about their meaning. However from the fact that tattooed mummies were found in frozen graves of the warriors we may deduct that they could have been a mark of courage and prestige. More often left hand was tattooed. Warrior was holding a bow in it so a tattoo could be a magical way to improve his aim.
Tatoos had a zoomorphic character - so as many Scythian works of art they depicted animals both real ant mythical.
