Now few words about use of this type of infantry. Spaniards were known for using formations called colunelas from colonel that was commanding them. They were composed of pikemen, rodeleros and arquebusiers. They numbered 800 to 1500 soldiers and enabled to combine traditional pikemen tactics with firepower of arquebuses that before the melee were shooting at the enemy and then retreting to be covered by pikemen. Rodeleros aith swords and shields were used to make breaches in the enemy formation.
At the beginning of the Italian Wars in 1505 reorganisation of these formations has taken place what I will describe later.
